Composting is the natural aerobic decomposition of biodegradable organic matter by microbes of organic material to a rich, dark, loose and earth-like substance. The decomposition is caused by aerobic bacteria, yeasts and fungi. Larger organisms, such as ants, nematodes and worms also aid this process.

How do I get started?

Here is a Four Step Guide to Creating Great Compost

  1. Choose a Site where you can place your compost heap or bin. make sure it is in a well-drained area that has some shade.
  2. What are you going to compost? To make the most of your compost you need a mixture of rich organic materials such as fruit and vegetable peelings, fresh grass clippings, as well as nitrogen-poor materials such as dry leaves, twigs and paper.
  3. Layering: Start with a thick layer of coarse material, such as twigs or mulch. Follow with a layer of garden clippings, food and vegetable scraps, and grass clippings. Add water after each layer to keep the heap moist but not wet.
  4. Compost needs some mainteance. Keep your compost well aerated to prevent foul odours or methane. A number of commercial bins can help. You can turn your compost with a garden fork on a weeky basis. If you are too lazy for that place garden stakes or pipes through the heap to allow air in.
